After Hurricane Melissa, thousands of Jamaican children lost not only their homes but their classrooms. Scoil Sinéad, through our Back to Class Jamaica initiative, is partnering with local schools to rebuild learning spaces, provide meals, and supply materials so that children can return to safe, nurturing classrooms.
This campaign reflects our belief that education is a right, not a privilege. With your help, we can restore access to learning – one child, one classroom at a time.
When Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica, schools across several parishes were flattened in a single night.
Classrooms, libraries, and playgrounds disappeared beneath wind and flood. Thousands of children, already vulnerable, were left without a place to learn, a meal to depend on, or the comfort of routine.
In the aftermath, many families were displaced, living in shelters or temporary housing. Teachers faced the heartbreak of seeing years of work destroyed. Yet, amid the devastation, one truth remained: education could not wait.
Scoil Sinéad joined hands with local principals, educators, and community leaders through the HOPE network and Teach Learn Teach Jamaica to respond quickly and practically.
Together, we launched Back to Class Jamaica, an emergency education relief initiative dedicated to rebuilding access to schooling for children affected by the storm.
The programme focuses not only on physical rebuilding, but on restoring the sense of normalcy, safety, and belonging that school brings to every child’s life.
In just the first weeks of operation, Back to Class Jamaica has:
With your continued support, we aim to:
Our ultimate goal is not just to rebuild schools, but to build resilience, communities that can stand stronger, teach better, and dream bigger.
Every book given, every tent raised, every meal served carries the same message:
The Back to Class Jamaica initiative represents what Scoil Sinéad stands for, inclusion, care, and opportunity for all.
It is an extension of our belief that learning should never stop, even in the darkest of times.
Your support turns loss into learning, and devastation into determination.
Every donation, no matter how small, directly funds education for children who have lost everything.
Together, we can ensure that Jamaica’s children are not left behind, because when education returns, hope returns with it.
